Free train Tokyo Olympic Vest
I was commissioned by the sports brand Freetrain to design their first illustrated vest as a tribute to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
The design was inspired by the rich culture of Japan, the dynamic movement of sport and celebrating the origins of the Olympic games.
To pay homage to the Greek origins of the Olympic games, the characters designed are a modern interpretation of black-figure pottery painting used in ancient Greece.
The use of the red circle throughout the design symbolises the Japanese flag alongside representing the athletes, working as a bridge unifying the two together.
The Japanese writing on the vest and waistband are the eight virtues of Bushido, a moral code of conduct used by samurai warriors in Japan. These eight values from integrity to compassion are also applied to sportsmanship and represent the core values of Freetrain.
